THE CONCEPT - THE HUMBLE POTTERY COLLECTION Each piece in the living wells studio HUMBLE Pottery Collection is a composition of many interrelated elements. The style brings together Victorianism, western Arts and Crafts informality, Asian space, natural materials and handcrafting with a practicality that responds to the needs of of modern domestic life. Vessels are glazed white, a color with associations of newness, purity, simplicity, and health. Austere forms combine curves with angularity while textured surfaces mingle with smooth planes saturated with a dark surface patina. In unison, these elements create tension and suggests history and depth. A square unglazed impression embellishes each piece. In this, there is an aesthetic search for beauty in imperfection and profundity in earthiness, of revering authenticity. Living Wells Studio's signature surface impression renders a simple depiction of three leaves on a branch in a square as a universal icon of peaceful living. The square reprents fairness, balance and firmness, as something that is squared is something that is stable, a foundation for building upon. Olive branches are used throughout modern and classical works to represent peace. Olives take much time and work to produce. In fact, the olive branch was a symbol for peace because the olive tree took many years to reach maturation and could therefore not be grown while armies were pillaging the land in times of war. The symbol of the triad or a trinity has existed over immeasurable time and throughout the world. It can be understood as a key to the integrity and interdependence of all existence. Seen together, these things they symbolize are interwoven and become Living Wells. |
